How to use the checklist
The steps follow the order that limits damage on island properties, starting with stopping the water and electrical safety. Tick items as you complete them, and print the page if you prefer paper.
The list covers general response and does not replace instructions from your insurer, utility or a restoration crew. When in doubt about safety, stay out and call for help.
Checklist questions
[Process] What should I do first in a leak?
Stop the water at the main or the fixture valve, then make the area safe by turning off power to wet rooms if you can reach the panel on dry ground. Call for help once the source is closed.
[Cost] Should I start drying myself?
You can mop up and open doors, but heavy extraction and drying work needs meters and equipment. Starting alone can also miss wet areas, so call a crew before covering or sealing anything.
[Safety] What should I save for the insurer?
Photographs, videos, the failed part, receipts for emergency costs and notes with times of calls. Keep the drying logs from the crew, since they show how the loss was handled.
